Erythromycin 250 mg

Pharmacological class.
Macrolide antibiotic

Indications:

• Alternative to penicillins in penicillin allergic patients in LRTIs, URTIs
• Skin & Soft Tissue infections
• Gonococcal male urethritis
• PID
• Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever
• Legionnaire,s disease
• Early syphllis

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults & children > 8yrs: 250 – 500mg QiD upto 4g daily in severe infections
• Children upto 2 yrs: 125mg QiD
• Children 2 – 8 yrs: 250mg QiD – Double doses for severe infections
• Early Syphillis: 500mg QiD * 14/7
• Uncomplicated Genital chlamydial and non gonococcal urethritis: 500mg BD * 14/7

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to macrolides
Concurrent administration with astemizole / pimozide / terfenadine / ergotamine & dihydroergotamine

Use in pregnancy & Lactation:
Safety has not been established In nursing mothers, unless benefi ts outweigh the risk

Precaution:
Impaired Hepatic function

Side Effects:
Dose related – nausea / abdominal cramps / diarrhoea / mild allergic reactions.
