Erythromycin 500mg
Pharmacological class.
Macrolide antibiotic
Indications:
- Alternative to penicillins in penicillin allergic patients in LRTIs, URTIs
- Skin & Soft Tissue infections
- Gonococcal male urethritis
- PID
- Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever
- Legionnaire,s disease
- Early syphllis
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults & children > 8yrs: 250 – 500mg QiD upto 4g daily in severe infections
- Children upto 2 yrs: 125mg QiD
- Children 2 – 8 yrs: 250mg QiD – Double doses for severe infections
- Early Syphillis: 500mg QiD * 14/7
- Uncomplicated Genital chlamydial and non gonococcal urethritis: 500mg BD * 14/7
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to macrolides
Concurrent administration with astemizole / pimozide / terfenadine / ergotamine & dihydroergotamine
Use in pregnancy & Lactation:
Safety has not been established In nursing mothers, unless benefi ts outweigh the risk
Precaution:
Impaired Hepatic function
Side Effects:
Dose related – nausea / abdominal cramps / diarrhoea / mild allergic reactions.
