Salcof Syrup

For the use by a Registered Medical Practitioner or Hospital or a Laboratory.

Composition:
Each 5ml contains Salbutamol B.P 1.0mg, Bromhexine B.P 2.0mg and Guaiphenesin B.P 50mg  as active ingredients.

Clinical Pharmacology:
Bromhexine
Bromhexine acts on the mucus at the formative stages in the glands within the mucus secreting-cells.

Pharmacokinetics
It is rapidly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and undergoes extensive first pass effect. Its bioavailability is 20%. It is widely distributed to the body tissues and highly bound to plasma proteins.

Salbutamol  
Salbutamol produces bronchodilation by relaxing smooth muscles through beta-2 receptors stimulation.

Pharmacokinetics
It is bound to plasma proteins at extent of 10%. After oral administration, it is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and undergoes first pass metabolism to the phenolic sulphate. Its bioavailability is about 50%.

Guaiphenesin
Guaiphenesin acts by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi. Thus it increases the efficiency of the cough reflex and facilitate removal of the secretions.

Pharmacokinetics
Guaiphenesin is well absorbed from the gastro- intestinal tract.It is readily  metabolized through both oxidation and demethylation ,and excreted in urine. Its plasma half life is 1 hour.

Indications:  
Salcof syrup is used for cough associated with acute and chronic bronchitis, common colds, bronchial asthma and other bronchospastic disorders.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults: 10ml every 8 hours
  • Children aged 6-12 years of age: 5ml every 8hours
  • Children aged 3-5 years of age: 2.5ml every 8hours
  • Children aged ½-2 years of age: 1.2ml every 8hours
  • Children under 6months not recommended

Contraindications:
Concomitant use with beta blockers, pregnancy, MAOI, serious cardiac or thyroid diseases.

Side Effects:  
Muscle cramps, tachycardia, palpitation, fine muscle tremor, headache, peripheral vasodilation, allergic reactions, insomnia, dizziness.

Warnings and Precautions:
Salcof syrup should be used cautiously in patients with hypertension, thyrotoxicosis, heart disease and tolerance.

Presentation:
60ml, 100ml and 180ml in  amber  coloured bottles  packed in unit boxes.

Storage:
Do not store above 300C. Store in a dry place. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
