MUCOTHIOL 5% SYRUP

COMPOSITION:
Each 5ml contains 250mg of Carbocisteine.
Also contains Methyl Paraben and Propyl Paraben.

Clinical Pharmacology

Pharmacodynamics:
Carbocisteine (S-carboxymethyl L-cysteine) has been shown in normal and bronchitic animal models to affect the nature and amount of mucus glycoprotein which is secreted by the respiratory tract. . Studies in humans have demonstrated that carbocisteine reduces goblet cell hyperplasia. Carbocisteine can therefore be demonstrated to have a role in the management of disorders characterised by abnormal mucus..

Pharmacokinetics:
Carbocisteine is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract.

Indications:
Carbocisteine is a mucolytic agent for the adjunctive therapy of respiratory tract disorders characterised by excessive, viscous mucus, including chronic obstructive airways disease.

Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

Use in Special Populations:
Pregnancy:
Although tests in mammalian species have revealed no teratogenic effects, Mucothiol is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Side effects:
Immune System Disorders
There have been reports of anaphylactic reactions and fixed drug eruption.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
There have been reports of skin rashes and allergic skin eruptions.
Gastrointestinal disorders
There have been rare reports of gastrointestinal bleeding occurring during treatment with Mucodyne.

Drug Interactions:
None stated
Warnings/Precautions:
Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.

Dosage and Administration:
Adults (over the age of 15 years):
The usual dose is 3 x 5ml spoonfuls three times daily initially, reducing to 2 x 5ml spoonfuls three times daily when a satisfactory response has been obtained.
Mucothiol 5% is not recommended for children
Mucothiol 2% is available for use in children

Storage:
Do not store above 30⁰C.  Store in a dry place. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate.
Use within 30 days of first opening of the bottle.

Presentation:
125ml  amber coloured pet & glass bottles packed in unit boxes.
