Indications;
Intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy.
Therapy & prophylaxis of Malaria caused by P. faciparum; P. vivax; P.malariae and P. ovale.
Dosage:
Intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy:
2 tabs once during the second trimester; 2 tablets once during the third trimester, last 2 weeks excluded ( for HIV –ve and HIV +ve women)
IPT should be given under Direct Observed Therapy (DOT) in the ante-natal clinic and can be given on an empty stomach.
Pregnancy: considered to be safe for pregnancy between 16 – 36 weeks gestation. After 36 weeks it should be avoided due to the risk of kernicterus in new born.
Side effects: Nausea; vomiting; leukopenia; purpura;
Over-dosage treatment: Gastric lavage & Forced diuresis.
